Born to Edit

The game I’m working on at the moment is a game concept of Daniels, involving a Bull being catapulted around a china shop, smashing dishes/otherthings. Its going really quite well, today I’ll be working on the Level editor, and it just felt right. A while back I made a game for Newgrounds called Expgen, which allowed the player to make their ownplatform game levels. My lack of skill at the time shows through slightly, by the way I perform simple tasks with a sledgehammer, but I’m still quite proud that I managed such a complex level editor in such a stable, almost bug free way. It made me feel good. I’m getting the same feeling right now with this editor – as my first proper AS3 project, I know I’ll be making some major errors with the way things are done, but in the end I’ll have it working. For people to be able to expand on the original content of the games I release is an amazing feeling. Level editors just add so much to a game for me, I hope the players feel the same. It also means I can share level design duties with other people, to speed up the production process.

Fun times :D

Also, I’m hoping to call the game CattlePult – as you may have noticed, I love cheesy game names :)

  1. Thats super special awesome.

  2. Heres an update on what I got done today on that editor.
    It now allows you to
    -Build the level.
-Generates a code for the level (and the compresses it for even easier sharing :D )
-Saves the level code to one of three slots.
-Loads levels into the game engine and allows you to play them.
-Allows reloading of levels back into the editor for tweaking.

    and includes the following features
-Intuitive Right Click interface for the editing grid
-Bumpers (this will make up the largest portion of the puzzle element in puzzle like levels (as the user must set the direction of the bumpers))
-Magnets – these bend the physics of the small area around them
-Plates – these are your goal
    -Customisable starting posistion.
-Boost powerup (thanks dan) this causes your bull to travel in its current direction regardless of physics until it hits a wall – woots

I’m quite pleased as to how it turned out. Now to gt on with the game content and make it rocking :D

  3. Mythbuster’s did a bull in a china shop episode… the results are not what you would think.

  4. Ace videoclip, but you’re missing the point – did the mythbusters Catapult the bulls into the china shop? I think not… :p

  5. I love mythbusters! That is quite the busted myth. Maybe our next game will be cattle-pulting a bull through a china shop with the object being to AVOID all the precious China. :D

  6. Sounds smashing! Pun intended.
