Sonny 2 - Interview with Krin
I recently had the opportunity to ask a few questions to Krin, the creator of Sonny and the mastermind behind one of the most popular RPG releases on the web. A few fans (including myself) have been curious about the production and release of Sonny 2 so I asked Krin if he would spill a few beans and he most certainly did! So without further ado here is an interview with Krin about the latest version of Sonny.
John: Tell us a bit about your team. Who is involved and what roles do they play in the creation of Sonny 2?
Krin: Some of the people who are working with me on “Sonny 2″ include David Orr, Joan CG, Will Arbuckle. David Orr is a musician, who also did the soundtrack and effects for the first Sonny. His new tracks for “Sonny 2″ are currently being composed, and I think they will sound more distinct and powerful than before whilst retaining the feel of the original Sonny soundtrack. Joan CG is an illustrator from Spain and also a great friend of mine. We’ve been working together since games like “Crimson Warfare” and “Sinjid:SotW.” Now he is back, and will be crafting the characters and landscapes in Sonny. Will Arbuckle, the creator of the “Edible Castle” series will work with me and Joan to bring you some high quality cut scenes to help with the narrative of the story.
John: What stage is Sonny 2 at? Can we get a estimation of when we should see it on Armor Games?
Krin: We’ve finished upgrading the actual engine and system of the game, so now we’re working on things like enemies, items, abilities, and of course, the three classes. We still have to design most of these things, both in the mathematical sense and in the graphical sense. I can’t tell you when it will be released, because I don’t know myself. In the past few months, most of the team including me have been locked down by things like final exams which is why we haven’t made much progress, but things are going along pretty fast now. It will be released when it’s COMPLETELY ready 
Quality cannot be rushed.
It’s been taking such a long time because the game is bigger than Sonny in a lot of ways. We recently talked about maybe having to split the game in half since it’s become so huge. Each Zone in Sonny 2 probably has more story progression to it than the whole of Sonny 1, and there are going to be at least 6 main story Zones (unless we split it), and several other bonus Zones that will also have interesting story motifs, but not be the driving force of the plot. Think of it as “Zone 4″ but with better integration.
Krin: The plot was something that received a lot of complaints about. We listened to every single complaint and we made the storyline one of the main focuses of Sonny 2. People said it ‘trailed off,’ and ‘it was too short,’ and the people are always right!
We’ve worked hard on the new plot, and I think you will find the story to be more engaging and coherent than in the original Sonny. So no more random Samurai ghosts and angry shamans. Doesn’t mean we’ll take away the characters’ dark sense of humor and one-liners though
As usual, a lot of the plot will be narrated through dialogs during battles, and the rest in cut scenes. In the worse case scenarios we might need to pop one or two boxes of text post-battle for you to read
Krin: You’ll hear what’s on the tape, and you’ll be thinking “Krin was probably high when he did this.” And no, it’s not a Rick Roll or anything of that nature.
You will also find out what happened on the ship the day Sonny was resurrected. You’ll get answers to most of questions presented in the original Sonny. Of course, those answers will just be the beginning
John: What are some of the new features of Sonny 2?
Krin: The AI has been improved and friendly AI is designed so that you won’t need to depend on them so much anymore, so the chance that you lose a fight because your AI teammate randomized the wrong ability will be much less. I’ve decided I don’t want to give players full control of the AI. There are plenty of games that do that, and I think it’s more interesting to have to work WITH the AI rather than control it completely. What you ARE able to do though, is to tell a teammate to fight in a different style. The 5 modes of AI are: Phalanx, Defensive, Tactical, Aggressive, Relentless. You can change it in combat.
Bosses and fights can now have ‘phases.’ For example, once you get a boss down to 50% life, he might say “Now I pwn you!” and starts using completely different skills and fighting styles, so your tactics and strategy are REALLY put to the test this time!
There is also a ‘hardcore’ more to play on. This mode will be like the normal mode, except each turn you have a limited time to make your move. I’m thinking of making it so that the faster you make your move, the more effective it is and the less likely it is to miss. This will put pressure on you and make it more intense and challenging.
Krin: Since there is not yet any multi-player interaction, balancing the classes basically means that the game is equally fun to play for all three classes. This can still be hard though, because we need to make sure all bosses are beatable with any class. And since the classes all have different ability trees, we’ll need to make bosses have more than one weakness (unlike the bosses in Zone 4 in Sonny, where there was only 1-2 viable tactics per boss). This doesn’t mean we’re planning to make it less challenging though. We’re actually hoping to make the endgame of Sonny 2 even more intense.
The actual ability trees themselves will be more flexible and useful than before. And example ability from the Biological class is “Crystallize.” It stuns the target for a couple of turns, yet at the same time shielding it from all damage. This could be used both on friends and enemies, for both defensive and offensive purposes.
Krin: Writing the story was hard. When we made Sonny, we never really thought people would be so interested in the story, so we left a lot of open ends. The challenge in Sonny 2 was to find a way to create a story that would be coherent with the first one, and also very exciting to experience on its own, AND also explain the loopholes we’ve left in the first Sonny.
Krin: Before people have had to wait up to a year for a new release of my games… And Sinjid fans are still waiting for 3+ years (I haven’t forgotten about you!). Don’t yell at me for having to wait two months 
We’re going fast, but we won’t release it until it’s reached the quality we want! I’ll get some screen shots when we are a little bit more progressed!
There you have it. Don’t yell at Krin, he’s working hard and it makes him sad.

Kick Ass! Take your time but don’t make us wait another couple of months please. I don’t think you should split the game because it is too big. The bigger the better! Its worth the load screen. What websites is it going to be on?

Will there be any glitches in Sonny 2? I mean, I don’t mean to but on http://www.Kongegate.com (Where I found the lovely Sonny) has glitches on it (the site dosen’t change anything but yeah….) I completed the game and found glitches. So, if there are glitches, make them hard to find so that the new people can’t cheat and finish the game. Make them only find-able to the completers of the game, or just leave glitches out all together.

krin the sonny series i the first of your series i have played to my knowledge and i loved the first one. I am happy to hear this will be longer and those questions will be answered. I also liked that you said the story line would be fixed. Where i found sonny it got 4.57/5 so does this mean on that site i may be seeing 4.7 or 8 for sonny 2.

i noticed something…… in the interview you said “and of course in the THREE classes” but in sonny there were assasin,destroyer,guardian AND gunslinger that makes 4 not 3 are you going to quit a class?(hope not)
and you should put a mini game in the preloader screen so they can wait and please DONT make the game in parts

Krin is my favourite game maker!!!! I hope Sonny 2 comes out next year. Make it good and i like the idea of the faster u make you attack the more damage it does. I agree with tristena1b2c3. Krin should make a demo or a youtube video for Sonny 2

Man..I thought Sonny was good, but I can’t wait for Sonny 2 to come out so it’ll be more of a challenge for those people who passed Sonny in like between 1 day - 2 weeks. I’d say 50/10 if my thoughts are correct. XD

Perhaps You could control them manually via choosing their moves for them…this is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL.

jake, the timed turns would only be an element on one game mode. If you don’t like it, play normal mode.

When the hell is this game gonna come out?! JANUARY 2009!!! is what I keep hearing and with how long its taken already, that might be correct. I’m not gonna give this game a 10 if it takes that long, because its more impressive if it can be made in a small amount of time. Bubble Tanks 2 is pretty fun though.
i think multiplayer would be pretty good, however i think it would be too long to make.(the comments STARTED like in march or something)i just wanna play it, finished, this year, full campaign, mystery solved, battabing battaboom done, YAY!

WHEN WILL IT COME OUT!!!! I’m sitting here just playing sonny over and over and over and over until I go mad! (much like this) If I were standing next to Krin I would say “is it done yet, is it done yet, is it done yet, is it done yet…” until I too go insane.
This post is over a month old. and krin said he had no idea when the game would be done. If it isn’t done any day now then Krin is one slow ass developer!

Why does the picture makes sonny look like a girl?
The girl is probably Teca the Guardian from Stage 4, but Teca could of been a guy because the other 2 Girls were wearing unchangeable clothes.
dude err can you make it that there is another paladin at the end but comes and helps be friends that would be awsome btw i think that the girl is the new person kinda like sonny man then they meet each other and go kick but
I like the game and i especcially like the thing that u will change the AI to a better thing. Cause in sonny 1 it was retarded no offence it was still a good game though. I dont think its worth wasting time making it online because it will be 2 boring with 10000000 sonnys running around. And a pregame loader <.< thats just stupid to waste time on

I wonder… “Crystallize”… Let’s say that your friend have low health, and you want to heal him without the risk of him dying right on, so you use crystallize. Will one still be able to heal the one behind the crystal?

hey guys if yout thinking what team mates u get in it there veradux and maybe the sombie chicki got to pictures of sonny but i cant show them to you because it wont work it looks mad and just the same as sonny 1 and u vs convicts lol there pretty strong in the picture sonny has 1155 hp veradux has 1056 hp and the tree convicts have 1056 hp sonny has a lot of health there but he only has 100% cotten shirt the same pipe in sonnt one and jeans and the same shoes and veradux has the same armour the combat healing suit if your wondering when sonny 2 comes out it might be next year in or in two or three or next month im ot completee sure but thats what i herd and please dont be mean at krin hes going the fasted he can im goin crazy to lol but u have to wait so i can get better and better and better reply if you want to know anything else ill be on this site every single day ok

sonny hit the top in a day and i’m sure sonny 2 will hit the most popular game list in about a nano second. Krin if by any chance you descide to make this into a movie i’m sure it will be about as popular as “I am legend” just remember to higher will smith for maximum $$$ lol. i’m curious whether it will explain the backgrounds of sonny’s friends aswell and if it will have sonny in it (and not just that blue girl)

ya know i liked Sonny’s battle song. I have a love bird that loves music. Hour 1 of playing sonny: when I’m battling and have my bird downstairs i start to hum it then the bird starts chirpin. Hour 2: i start to harmonize (i bet your thinking wtf? whats next the bird chirp to the beat?) this is when i usually stop.

hey krin. im not complaining and i dont care if you fix it or not but theres a glich on sonny that if u go to the items screen and pik an armor or weapon or what ever and drag it doun and klik on the skills screen and drop it on your skills you will gain the stats the armor/weapon had but the armor/weapon will be delleated. i thot it whas funy personlolly. i whas level 20 wering no armor and had no weapon and i whas doing 5,000 on an averege hit.
now, sonny 2 should be a good game if krin is takeing this long on it, im trying to make games myself and i understand alot about the program so i can make a crapy game in about half an hour. if krin is takeing this long id say its going to be good. also stop bugging him. really every website ive been to that was sonny realated had atleast 5 people putting posts up complaining about how long its takeing or they wer trying to git an exact date from krin. just leave him alone to work on his game and remember the game isnt the only thing he dus all day, he has a life.

I would love to know a release date - we’ve been waiting forever. I have to say - I love that every class with get it’s own skill tree. That allows TONS of replayability. Just make the game long enough that you play each class for a copious amount of hours… The first game I played for about 5-6 hours and beat it soundly, and was done. I enjoyed the experience, I just wish it lasted longer.
I hope you maintain your excellent standard for graphics, as that was one of the reasons the first sonny Shined.

p.s. I’m sorry about the World of Warcraft comment, i didn’t know that using flash to make a game immediately made it easier to make said game.
Also, just because some peeps can be fast and make a piece of **** doesn’t mean you should think someone can make an awesome game in the same amount of time.
Please don’t take the “Item drag onto option and get it’s stats without wearing it” glitch. But one major one, if it does happen to be in Sonny 2, you have to take out the glitch where when you die on the first level, the game goes crazy and NaN everything. please release it soon, a certain date would be nice, and a question, do you start from level one again or continue from your old character? (But I guess starting from level 1 would be fun

make sure there is no glitch like taking an item and going to ability screen and it goes into ur stats. also the lvl up glitch (to me) is just cheating ive seen countless vids on youtube about lvl 100 and how to lvl up. ><

Well it sounds like it will be quite epic, nearly christams time now maybe 5 weeks to spare of course it will be hard to balance end of year and perhaps party arangements while maintaining enough resolve to build further into the game, be patient… can’t wait for Sonny 2!

i loved the first one but it was too easy if i used the right stradegy. dont make the 2nd too hard. maybe a difficulty setting would be a nice idea…

Yeah I agree with steve but it’s also nice to let the developer know how much people want the game but seriously couldn’t Krin update or approximately tell us how long so at least people could shut up and wait like seriously no updates no info no approximation. I know it takes time to make a good game but really at least tell the people how long they have to wait.

I just completed the game and I still dont know wtf is happening… All I know is that I was on a ship, we were attacked, I got revived by a blind man, he dies and I go on a quest to do what exactly? I DONT KNOW! as for the tape…I was REALLY dissappointed…unless theres a Sonny 3, this just raised more questions for me… Also, the first time you fight the girl and she chucks a knife into veradux’s head… she then runs away and she has a body while going down an elevator… WTF!!! plz e-mail me Krin, I cant possibly write everything down here…

IF you make a sonny 3 you sould make the people he fights with cooler. maby more zombies. or red demon. Maby even blue. but different just like sonny. And Able to choose the levelups and abilitys and attacks of them.. we should have just as much control over them as sonny.
