Give the Gift of Mobility

Free Wheelchair Mission

I recently had the privledge of going to Peru to help distribute Wheel Chairs to those in need. The organization we partnered with was ‘Free Wheelchair Mission‘, and they have a goal to distribute 20 Million Wheel Chairs worldwide.

The typical cost of Wheelchair is $100+, but FWM developed a Wheelchair that cost $52 to build and this includes shipping to a 3rd world country.

I would encourage everyone to watch the video on their homepage and consider giving $52 to provide a Wheelchair for someone in need.

Here’s a 2 Minute highlight video from the Peru trip (Click Here)

  1. Wow, I’m really impressed that you went so far out of your way to volunteer. It’s easy to give money but it’s fantastic when people give their own time- something I need to be doing more of. I think it’s both fantastic and inspiring what you did!

What if game developers and flash artists weren’t just known for fun and games (and in newgrounds’ case hentai and phallic cartoons) but also took a more active role in our communities- that’s a world I some day want to live in.

Also, that movie was very well made. :)

  2. Wow!
    You guys are Epic!

  3. Thats awesome, I had read about those free wheelchairs and how there used like bike wheels and stuff but never seen one! They actually look preety cool, good luck in any other volunteer stuff your going to do.

  7. I don’t understand why people rave about this design. Why do people in poor countries have to put up with poor quality products. That don’t meet standards in quality and safety at home.

Wheelchairs are not just chairs on wheels they are also seating systems needed to support the user. This design does not provide postural support.

According to WHO 60% of donated chairs are rejected by the user, because they are inappropriate

This is totally inappropriate, the material that the plastic chair degrades with UV light and becomes brittle and will shatter. The footrests are not adjustable and don’t fully support the user.

This chair is a death sentence. 75% of people with spinal injury die within 2 years of the trauma mostly due to pressure sore from poor seating.

Mobility is one thing and laudable, but only a small part of the story, wheelchairs need to be properly fitted, the user needs training and follow up to be sure that the device is helping and not causing problems.

This organization is only concerned about numbers rather than giving people what they need.

  8. wheelchairs should be appropriate, not just an issue of low cost! Are those people assessed for such products?? and i wonder to who can we say they are appropriate. I totally agree with Bob!!! Respect the rights of persons with disabilities PLEASE!!!!
