First, understand that I represent the male, over 40 years old, white collar crowd who is not an avid video game player. I have never played HALO or MIST or DOOM or World of Warcraft. Use that information to categorize my comments below.

These are my first impressions upon playing the game for the first time:
    -good intro screen/music
    -very friendly HELP screen
-perhaps too many “things to do”. Too much to remember?
-credits are well done but go by way too fast to read
-”mute” option on main menu is almost transparent, and therefore hard to see
-I played it a while, but got a bit frustrated when I couldn’t see any reward. Also, I am sure that if I knew the “good guys”

from the “bad guys”, I would enjoy it more.

Is the concept “fresh and cool?” It is very interesting, but probably aimed at a more video-game-advanced a audience than me.
Is it memorable? 6 on a scale of 10
Is it “fun to play?” 6 on a scale of 10

These are my first impressions upon playing the game for the first time:
Thanks for the “Now Loading” bar to let me know about how long to wait
    very impressive startup screens!
    Cute “Credits” screen
Wow! Good work on the HIGH SCORE screen! This took some work!
I like the KEYS on the help screen. Leave no question about what you are talking about
When Green Globs apear on screen, I wasn’t sure if I had won or lost

After game ended, and I got the FINAL SCORE screen, I typed in my name and hit enter. But the name entered was erased (shouldn’t ENTER submit the info?)
Your instruction screen said “The boss cannot be damaged by direct fire, only combos.” But I could not find out what a “boss” was or loooked like.

Is the concept “fresh and cool?” I have seen a lot of games like this, but I did enjoy it!
Is it memorable? Yeah. I liked it because it was made by students, and it worked!
Is it “fun to play?” I found this to be real fun. It was easy to learn, and I didn’t have to remember a bunch of rules.

These are my first impressions upon playing the game for the first time:
    Impressive Startup Screen
    Great Story Screens !!
After getting to the “In 21XX, Cog Head Robotics created” screen, I was stuck, and could go no further. Therefore, I was unable to play the game. I tried the “Main Screen/ Play” and the “Main Screen/Instructions/Play” routes, but neither allowed me to play the game.
After taking the “Main Screen/Instructions” route, I was unable to return to the main menu.

Is the concept “fresh and cool?” I liked what little I saw. This game might have been fun if I could have played it
Is it memorable? Only because I could not play it
Is it “fun to play?” I couldn’t play it. Sorry.

    Catch A Wav
First, understand that I represent the male, over 40 years old, white collar crowd who is not an avid video game player. I have never played HALO or MIST or DOOM or World of Warcraft. Use that information to categorize my comments below.

Also, understand that I am the Faculty Advisor for Catch-A-Wav, so I may show bias one way or the other. I have never “played” this game before today, although I have observed several other students playing this game. Since this game requires a microphone, it is a bit unusual. Without a microphone, this game is largely unplayable, I believe. But, at the same time, this different type of interface (microphone) might get real popular, like “Guitar Hero”. Either way, it took guts for the team that created Catch A Wav to venture into a microphone-controlled game.

These are my first impressions upon playing the game for the first time:
Startup screen - Very interesting. Perhaps you should have been more explicit with your instructions. For instance, when you say “Hold constant sounds to control your wave”, I am left wondering which hand to hold them with?”
Very helpful and friendly screen transitions
When I clicked on the PLAY button on the main menu, the game showed a surfboard at the top of the screen, and then did nothing. I could not return to the MAIN MENU because the only choice on the screen was the OPTIONS surfboard (which did work).

Is the concept “fresh and cool?” Yes. The microphone input was a ingenious idea!
Is it memorable? Only because I could not play it
Is it “fun to play?” I could not play the game. But I have seen others play this game, and they seemed to enjoy it!

    Destination Earth
First, understand that I represent the male, over 40 years old, white collar crowd who is not an avid video game player. I have never played HALO or MIST or DOOM or World of Warcraft. Use that information to categorize my comments below.

These are my first impressions upon playing the game for the first time:
The title at the top of the page was “DestinationEarthGF”. Was the “GF” a fluke? Maybe something that you were going to change later?
After startup screen, there were no instructions on how to get to the next screen. Instructions might be helpful, describing how to go from one page to the next.
After getting to the “Credits Screen”, I could not return to the main menu.
Mission Failed screen should have had a link back to Main Menu
There were no instructions on how to play, although it was not hard to understand how to play.
After colliding, sometimes the game would ignore the collision, like it did not happen

Is the concept “fresh and cool?” It was different in that it was so simple to play, which I liked !
Is it memorable? 8 on a scale of 10
Is it “fun to play?” yes. I found it particularly easy to learn to play, and found myself competing against it! The background music was good too!

    Produce Panic
First, understand that I represent the male, over 40 years old, white collar crowd who is not an avid video game player. I have never played HALO or MIST or DOOM or World of Warcraft. Use that information to categorize my comments below.

These are my first impressions upon playing the game for the first time:
The title at the top of the page was “ProducePanicBeta”. Should “beta” be in the title?
I liked the professional look-and-feel of the startup screen!
I enjoyed the mouseover sounds on the startup screen!!
This game was very professional-looking throughout the game!
I loudly applaud the use of “purchased” music from Soundsnap.com! This reduces/eliminates any copyright infringement.
There were “enemies” in the kitchen scene, but no other enemies after that. Was this because you ran out of time?

Is the concept “fresh and cool?” I was very impressed by the professionality of the look-and-feel of the game through the kitchen scene. Good work ! I assume that you ran out of time, or this game would have had mre features.
Is it memorable? Yes. 8 on a scale of 10
Is it “fun to play?” yes. I found it particularly easy to learn to play, and found myself competing against it! The background
    music was good too!

    Spit Wad Assault
First, understand that I represent the male, over 40 years old, white collar crowd who is not an avid video game player. I have never played HALO or MIST or DOOM or World of Warcraft. Use that information to categorize my comments below.

These are my first impressions upon playing the game for the first time:

    Wow! Impressive startup screen!
Clever “Spitwad sounds” for mouse-over events on Main Menu
No instructions link on Main Menu
Small spelling error. The Rules Page says to “Collect tokets…”. This should probably say “Collect tokens…”, since the gray coin says “PASS TOKEN” on it.
The “First Day of class…” message was clever and funny !!
After playing the first round, I smiled, because I enjoyed playing the game.
I am not sure about the “reloading”. Why were they there?
Your “Student Store” was very creative!
When I “Pass”ed a room, You were very clever to add another room as a yellow tab!
I found that just because I hit the student in the back of the head, that this was not good enough. I seemed to have to hit the back of the head at “just the right spot”. This was a challenge.
Your character “Johny” in Room 210 (of school) seemed to be holding 2 guns(?) in her hand. Unfortunately, this may be misinterpreted by many. Schools and guns don’t mix. Think Columbine.

Is the concept “fresh and cool?” Yes. 8 out of 10. This was a great idea for a game!!
Is it memorable? No. The guns made it something I would rather forget.
Is it “fun to play?” You brought me back down to earth with the guns in the student’s hands. While the fame might have been fun to play because of 6th grade antics of throwing spitwads, the guy with the 2 guns in the school overshadowed any fun I had. This is known as an “800 pound gorrilla sitting on your couch” - it’s hard to ignore.

    Sorry for the downer.

    Wacky Workout
First, understand that I represent the male, over 40 years old, white collar crowd who is not an avid video game player. I have never played HALO or MIST or DOOM or World of Warcraft. Use that information to categorize my comments below.

These are my first impressions upon playing the game for the first time:
Great music for Main Menu. I wished it would have looped, instead of playing once and then quitting.
Sigh. In the Story, you misspelled “you’re” (you spelled it “your”). Sorry - I am a teacher 24/7!
In the Story Screen, I liked how your screens raised and lowered in the background
Clock looks weird at times. Instead of showing 2-digts for hours:minutes:seconds, readouts would be 1-digit.
I really liked how the character would “rev” up - from standing still to running at full-speed!
In your instructions, you say that when you go through the “exit’, that you go to the next level. But when I went through the exit, the game ended!
This game has some great graphics, and some great programming! Good work!
This game seems to play the same way every time, so once you know how to “win” the game, it could get easy.
I could not make the seesaw work. I am sure that this is my fault, and could be used as a good indicator of when a player goes from a beginner to novice !

Is the concept “fresh and cool?” Yes. 9 out of 10. Good work!
Is it memorable? Yes. I will return to play it simply because it was fun.
Is it “fun to play?” 9.5 out of 10. I will try to go back to it, because “I know that there is something that I missed”. Maybe a hidden door, or a next level. I have seen students who have played the game get the seesaw to work, so I know that it will work.

    You Call Yourself a Superhero?

First, understand that I represent the male, over 40 years old, white collar crowd who is not an avid video game player. I have never played HALO or MIST or DOOM or World of Warcraft. Use that information to categorize my comments below.

These are my first impressions upon playing the game for the first time:
Wow ! Looking at the credits, there are some “heavy Hitters” listed there for both programmers and artists (I have had many of them as students)! Yeah, and the Faculty Advisor: Eric Martin it top-notch too! :) :)
In the INSTRUCTIONS, you give me the choice of using “A” or “Left-Arrow” ! I am impressed! Some prefer to use one set of

keys, and others use the other set of keys! Great empathy for the player!
The moving clouds in sky are cute!
Blinking lights at bottom of screen are cute (they represent the enemy that the superhero becomes)
The game is politically correct, in that you can’t lose - you just go to a “Game Over” screen if the other guys wins!!
It was cute to see that “Bad guys” were stereotyped by raccoon-mask/striped shirts! Very creative !! :) :)

Is the concept “fresh and cool?” I found it weirdly fresh and cool.
Is it memorable? Yes. 9 on a scale of 10. I look forward to returning to play the game, even though there is no “winner” in the game
Is it “fun to play?” Yes. When I played the game, “winning” was not even much of a choice! I just had fun seeing how to conquer the bad guys. This game might have a cult following, like the Rocky Horror Picture Show: where watching/participating in the movie became the goal, rather than waiting for the climax of the movie to see if the good guys win/the guy gets the girl/or some other type of ending. In the same sense, playing “You Call Yourself a Superhero?” was not about “winning or losing, it was just about enjoying playing the game.

    1 Catch a Wav
Original gameplay and good programming. Not completely perfect, as it’s easy and not really balanced(and it has no loader).
    2 Wacky Workout
Original gameplay, but not really good executed and half-professional sprites.
    3 Destination Earth
Looks almost proffesional. The only thing, it hasn’t really got good gameplay.

Catch A Wav is awesome! You can get a cheap mic for $15 so no complaining!

I couldn’t figure out how to play Produce Panic and the “Controls” button not responding to a click didn’t help…

BioLancer was fun, but not especially innovative… Then again, I’m not much of a shooter fan.

1st- Biolancer. By Far anybody that says other wise hasn’t even played it.

2nd- Produce Panic. pretty cool needs to be completed.

3rd- destination earth. I’m not saying i liked it its just that I couldn’t vote on anything else.

Bio - I can’t even play it for more than 10 seconds. Cool idea but the character doesn’t stand out. More detail was put into surroundings.

You call yourself a Super Hero - It was way too glitchy and the animations didn’t look very well done. I couldn’t tell if i was striking or not. The main character didn’t look very pleasing.

Cannibot - Didn’t have a clear goal. good idea but wasn’t that original.

Catch a Wave - Didn’t have a mic, so couldn’t really get into it.

Destination Earth - I didn’t really have that much fun with it. It was kind of original besides all the other “dodge that objects with the mouse games” out there.

BioLancer - Amazing! I played it and got all my friends to play it. Fun and addictive. Very original for a shooter/puzzle. A little more work and it would be amazing on something like XBLA.

WackyWorkout - way to slow and unrewarding. Original but not very fun to play. Memorable but for all the wrong reasons. way to easy to get clunky and slow.

Spit Wad Assault - nothing was going on, I got bored real quick. Taking the idea of getting so bored that you have to shoot spit balls to at classmates to entertain yourself? It easier and more rewarding in real life.

Produce Panic - I beat it in 43 seconds. cool sprites and looks like a lot of hard work went into it. It was also an original platformer. Clever name too i might add. I would like to see it after it gets completely done.

  43. Paul Mc Awesome on June 26th, 2009

    1. Biolancer
It was fun. I liked the game play and artwork in it also.
    2. Produce Panic
The name was cleaver. At first I thought i was going to scare people or produce panic. But I liked the 3d characters. Needs to be longer though.
    3. I don’t know which should go third. All the rest equally needed more work.

  44. Tim on June 26th, 2009

    -bio
was a platforming game. the background scrolling was nice and fun to watch. the boxed environment made the game feel like there was a beginning and end to every level. the ability to turn into other things was cool. out of all the other platforming games, this one kept the feel of “trial and error” to it, which is the best feeling for a platforming game. i liked how there werent any lives so there wasnt an ultimate “game over” which would aggravate me.

    -biolancer
this is a fun game that mixed together a shump and puzzle game.

    -canibot
this platforming game was interesting. the character was cute and eating stuff. the programming needs some work, the collision becomes broken at a certain point and dying is easy.

    -catch a wav
couldnt be loud in my computer room so i couldnt experience much about it. i liked the tiki heads.

    -destination earth
    nothing really special about it.

    -produce panic
looks fantasic, looks like there was a lot of work put into the characters, enemies and background.

    -spit wad assault
this game had some good looking anime characters. i like the concept of keeping kids awake for a boring lecture. this reminds of a non-addicting games at addictinggames.com.

    -wacky workout
i didnt understand the goal of the game at first but after dying a couple of times in a certain direction, and not continuing to the left where i ended up looking like a starving child, it was a good concept of a platforming game.

    -you call yourself a superhero?
i didnt know how to do anything to the enemies or what the goal was to get through the game until someone had pressed all the buttons and told me. i guess thats what i get for not reading the instructions. the game needs more ways of becoming unique.

    my vote

1st BioLancer - fun and fresh, unique and cool. addicting to all the people that i showed to play it.

2nd Bio - fresh and cool. only other game that ive seen anyone get really far into. really has the most platforming feel to it than all the other platforming games.

3rd Produce Panic - really looks amazing, level designs and character models are fluent.

  45. Dave S. on June 26th, 2009

    1) Biolancer fits the elements to consider the best.
    2) Bio mainly because it was the best platformer of the bunch
    3) Produce Panic! cool name neat, idea just need to be fixed up a bit to make it feel like a complete game

    1. BioLancer
    2. Bio
    3. Destination Earth

Bio: The game graphic are not too impressive and there are a few glitches in the game that made the game difficult, but not in a fun way. However your idea of the game was good and I see great potential in the concept of the game, but the bugs need to be fixed.

BioLancer: This game looks good. The game starts easy and there seems to be a random easy level around stage 6 or 7 which made it’s difficulty progression off. The game play is really good and this is one of the better variations of a shooter that I’ve seen. If only you had music in it.

Connibot: This game’s graphic are solid. This game was hard to grasp as first. I couldn’t figure out I could climb for awhile and was trying to avoid damage, thinking that the floating objects were opponents. Also you should let people know that you need to hit the space bar to get passed the first screen.

Catch a Wave: Honestly, I dont have a mic, and I am not going to by one just to play this game, however reading from how to play it seems like it could be really good.

Destination Earth: The graphics were solid, but the gameplay was a bit odd. The collision sensitivity needed work as I don’t know how I ever died in the game. The game would be better if more was thrown at you at once.

Produce Panic!: The Graphics were really good! However the game is majorly incomplete. You don’t have enough enemies and all you need to do is move forward to kill them.

Spit Wad Assault: The graphics are alright. The main issue I have is reload time and the lack of shooting animation. The game could be better if you made it so that you didn’t take time to reload, but rather got in trouble if missing so many times, or at least a faster reload time with that tacked on.

Waky Workout: The running animation needs work. Collision detection needs work. Jumping should be a little faster. I can go left at the beginning for a very long time. The only reason I have more problems with your game is that you tried to do so much more with it, but failed to bring it all together in time.

You Call Yourself a Super Hero?: Art. Art. Art. Start with the basics.

To be honest I basically picked the three most finished games and then rated them into how entertaining they were.

    1. BioLancer
    2. Bio
    3. Destination Earth

I am a 20 year old typical gamer. I play flash games fairly often. Here are my reviews of these flash games. I’m just going to go down the list.

Bio: This game has an interesting plot. I liked how the game used the different molecules to do different things. I will admit I did not beat this game, but I think I got pretty far. I was not to impressed with the jumping mechanics. I kept falling through the bouncing pads and dying. The green squiggily lines were pretty annoying too. Their body movements made them hard to predict. Overall: decent platformer. Needs some work on the jumping.

Produce Panic!: I liked this games graphics. It is obvious that some time was spent into the background and the character animations. Especially the boss at the end. With that said, there are some major flaws with this game. All I did was position the cursor in front of my guy and keep moving forward. And beat the game by doing so. Overall: pretty decent graphics, horrible fighting mechanics and way to easy and short.

BioLancer: I liked this game. Pretty good graphics. I liked the difficulty on it. This game is the most difficult out of the nine I’m reviewing. I did not beat this game because it is actually pretty hard in some places. The main issue that I had with this game is that the game didn’t fit on my screen. I could only see the top 75%. Which isn’t that bad but can get pretty annoying. Overall: fantastic game. Nicely made and well thought out with different obstacles and enemies.

Spit WaD Assault: YAY ANIME CHIBIS!! XD Ok now on to the review. I liked the concept. The animations made it enjoyable to play. It did get difficult at times. I didn’t like the fact that you could only buy the upgraded guns once and that they only lasted through one level. using the normal gun in the later levels is impossible. The normal gun also didn’t reload fast enough and thusly made it really annoying to use. Overall: cool concept. Cool animations. Normal gun sux and the other guns don’t last long enough.

Cannibot: This game had decent animations. However, it was plagued with many glitches. In the first level, I was able to infinitely climb to the end. The second level after I turned off the fan and died due to falling damaged, the fan was seen in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, spinning outside of its place. When I went to try to turn it off, it killed me. The last level did not have any glitches that I found, but it was much too easy. Overall: Too easy and way too many glitches.

Wacky Workout: I lulzed at the running animations. It was goofy. The first thing I did was run to the left and off of the game. I liked the concept of keeping the weight while running around and beating stuff up. The controls pissed me off, however. Extremely awkward action button placements made the game annoying to play. When I got hit by the robot things, I couldn’t figure out what was happening until I died. The character lacked damage animations. I also glitched through the breakable wall and got stuck there because I wasn’t heavy enough to weigh down the switch. Overall: Pretty unique concept, poorly executed though.

Catch a Wave: Unfortunately, I could not get this game to work. The game kept registering everything from my mic and my dude stayed at the top of the screen. I was able to pass the first level this way, but I was not able to pass the second. Overall: cool animations, very unique concept, but very limiting to who can play it. And no, I will not shell out $15 to play a free game.

You Call Yourself a Superhero?: Honestly, the only redeeming quality that I could find in this game was the cycling of super powers. It gave some variation to the game. Other than that, this game was horrible. The animations looked like it was done in MS Paint by a 5 year old in 15 minutes. The enemies did not attack you unless you stood there and took it. The walking animation sometimes didn’t work. The boss was taken out with one hit. Overall: other than the cycling powers, terrible. Animations= poor. Enemies= poor. A horrible game and I hope whoever made this game take a good hard look at their decision to go college for game art and do a little soul searching.

Destination Earth: not the most original game I’ve played. I can say that I have played a few flash games like this. The sun animation was cool and the rocks coming at you looked pretty cool. Other than that, it was pretty boring and I stopped playing after about a minute. Overall: this game does not attempt to break new ground on flash gaming. Disappointing.

    First Place: BioLancer
    Second Place: Spit Wad Assault
Third Place: Catch a Wave (Just because it looked like fun and the other games were pretty bad)

    1. Biolancer - While not totally original, the game plays well and is highly functional. Im not much of a shooter fan, but this game has quality. The controls and concept were easy to understand, which is more then I can say for most of the games. I liked the intro movie as well as the high score system. Great job by such a small team.

    2. Destination Earth - Well done and functional, if extremely simple. I wish there was more too this then just asteroid dodging, perhaps power-ups or attacks. It took me a little while to figure out it was controlled by the mouse.

    3. Bio - Very expansive, I like how the use of the “ions” as power-ups. There is alot to remember though. In the help menu too many concepts are thrown at you to quick. It was easier to figure out through trial and error, then by reading the help menu.

Honorable Mention. Catch a Wav - For the record I couldn’t even play this game, because I don’t own a microphone. However I give you a lot of credit for trying such an original concept. Next time don’t sacrifice accessibility for originality.

    1st: Biolancer
    2nd: Produce Panic
    3rd: Destination Earth

My Reviews for all of the games:

Bio: Too simplistic, very slow and uninteresting gameplay, no death animation, just immediately flash back to start, mediocre music, stupid and unneeded backstory.

Produce Panic: No indication of hit detection, crosshair was useless, pretty mindless aside from the decent background artwork and music. Too easy to win, hardly any enemies in the sewer area, monotonous level design. Distant second.

Biolancer: Could have used more sound and/or music. Very forgiveable due to sweet gameplay and art direction. Clearly the winner.

Spitwad Assault: Very cliche anime art, next to zero sound effects, no music, no visible representation of the spitwads actually hitting their targets, almost no difference between the weapons. Pretty boring overall.

Cannibot: Same level looping, tedious platforming, eating the robots wasn’t fun at all, lame music. Pretty mindless and simplistic overall.

Wacky Workout: Broken level, terrible animation, crappy artwork, dumb hit detection, very jittery when you get hit, stupid music, and what is this Falcon Punch stuff? Ripoff much? You can tell this was from a Smash Bros fanboy.

Catch A Wav: Had no mic, couldn’t play it.

You Call Yourself A Superhero: More like, “You Call Yourself A Game!” A five year old could have done better artwork. Most inconsistent movement and animation I’ve ever seen in a flash game, extremely unresponsive controls, sort of decent hit detection, overall mindless and unintuitive combat system, dumb and ineffective special moves. An assault on my sensibilities and all five of my senses. Yes. Even smell and taste. It was so bad I could smell it. I could taste its stink. Clearly the worst.

Destination Earth: No instruction screen, inconsistent hit detection with asteroid distance, hard to identify when they’re within striking distance of you, monotonous looping music, title is a misnomer because it suggests that you’ll never actually get to earth when you get game over. Fairly aimless and stupid game. Distant third only because it was the most tolerable of the worst.

  66. Cody on June 27th, 2009

Did I say Destination Earth? I meant Spit Wad Assault.

  67. Ryan Cypret on June 27th, 2009

I’d like to heavily modify some aspects of my “You Call Yourself A Superhero” review. The movement was rather inconsistent, but mainly in the startup frames. It took a while to actually get moving. And in some frames he’s just sliding along the scenery without any movement whatsoever. And the same startup applied when you held the direction to go right while attacking. There was clearly something conflicting going on here.

The special moves are too random and otherwise useless against the hordes of generic enemies, which are not only repetitive and boring but they make hardly any effort to attack you. The stretch where they are located was far too long to hold my interest.

Overall, not the worst, but still pretty bad in my book.

  68. Ryan Cypret on June 27th, 2009

Also would like to add that it would have been much better to program a button to manually scroll through your special moves rather than just having the game play roulette for you.

    1. BioLancer

This certainly seemed like the most complete game of the bunch. I also like the style and originality. People seem to be knocking it for being a shooter, but in order to be truly successful in the game, you need to take advantage of the puzzle elements in the game. The variety in enemies was very appealing, as well. I could certainly see myself playing this game, as is.

    2. Bio

Excellent game development. The idea is very original, and the transformations of the character are unique. There are some bugs here and there that get annoying, but it seems pretty complete as far as presentation goes.

    3. Wacky Workout

I enjoy the concept of this game. The art style is interesting, but the animations almost give me a headache when i’m playing. If this game had been developed more, and presented better, I feel like it would be more of a contender for the number 1 spot.

    NO PLACERS

Produce Panic - Art was awesome, but the gameplay was not. You can simply run through the map and not worry about a single enemy. Also, it seems pointless to worry about the mouse at all.

Spit Wad Assault - Prettty boring.

Cannibot - Cool concept, but very few ways to lose. It seems like something should be threatening you as you go through eating fellow robots.

Catch a Wave - I think it’s really cool that you brought in the element of using a microphone. I, however, do not have a mic :(. I hope to obtain one and give your game a proper rating.

Destination Earth - Very simple. The collisions need to be addressed, as I often found myself dying without knowing how. The difficulty should progress, too.

You Call Yourself a Superhero - … Where to begin. The art style is not appealing, to say the least. None of the perspective makes sense, it seems like MS Paint was used to produce the graphics, and the animations are less than stellar. The random ability is a good idea….but the constant cycling is not. There should be something the player can do, or a condition that changes the ability rather than a constant cycling. Also, I couldn’t even figure out if there was a difference in the way the abilities affected the enemies, or if it was simply a different animation because they all (INCLUDING THE BOSS) die in 1 or 2 hits.

Not to really bring excuses for any of the games, but most of these games only had a timeframe of about 3 months to complete, some even less, way less. Ok I am not sure whats going on. games are suppose to be rated on the following:

    1. Is the concept “fresh and cool?”
    2. Is it memorable?
    3. Is it “fun to play?”

I see games that are far from these things being voted in #1 spot. but then again there is “stuff” in this competition that shouldn’t even be considered games.

    1.Biolancer
1.Is the concept “fresh and cool?” Yes
    2. Is it memorable? Never played a puzzle/shooter
    3. Is it “fun to play?” Yea kept me comin back for more

    2.Bio
1.Is the concept “fresh and cool?” Yea cool twist to a platformer
    2. Is it memorable? Yea
    3. Is it “fun to play?” Yea maybe once then I loose interest

    3.catch a wave
1.Is the concept “fresh and cool?” Yea never seen a mic game
    2. Is it memorable? well only mic flash game i’ve seen
    3. Is it “fun to play?” No barely even works. tell you the truth. I hate this game. the art is cool thats about it.

For everyone else that I didn’t mention get out of this program. Maybe Criminal Justice, especially people that worked on “You call yourself a superhero” the art in this game is horrendous I can’t believe it took three talentless people to create these bad game assets.

Note: Almost all of them were incomprehensible at first as it assumed I’d read the instructions (or discover where they were, in the case of Spid wad assault).

    1. Spit wad assault - not much fun, but it seemed complete and needed polish like animations. It was at least playable.

    2. Catch a wav - originality and potential.

    3. Wacky workout - while not great, it was different and I felt better implemented than some of the other games.

That being said, I actually do work at a game company. None of these games meet the expectation of what I hope to see when interviewing candidates at work, but I’m hoping that it’s because these were very short dev cycles (like a few weeks) or they’re people just starting out.

In both cases I would stress simplicity! Fun games don’t need huge scrolling backgrounds or lots of screens. They don’t even need to have a title screen. Short, simple, quick. That should be the motto when developing an application like this. I felt many of them were too ambitious and fell flat because of it.

  146. A Game Developer on July 2nd, 2009

The only game which showed any real originality was Catch A Wave…unfortunately not many people have microphones, and even less want to shout like maniacs at their computer.

All of them suffered from a clear lack of having someone that wasn’t their close friend play the game. Massive UI confusion, controls that didn’t always work, physics that were not always well done, anoying bugs, poor level designs…

When it comes to game development, it’s really important to:
    1. Play test your game. Take your “this is my baby” glasses off and really ask yourself, is this something you would enjoy playing?
    2. Have your target audience play it, but try to get people that will give you brutally honest feedback.

Game reviewers are viscious, and will tear your creation apart…so you need to have a thick skin and be willing to take critical feedback, and use it to make your creation better.

Alot of these games *could* (with alot of work) be developed into something fun…but right now they’re largely unplayable, unpresentable, and barely above “concept” quality.

From a professional standpoint, Produce Panic would get my number one vote had it been a complete game. It definitely looked the best, but was lacking gameplay. So first would have to go to Bio, as it was complete. Alright gameplay, except the honey-comb trampolines malfunction occasionally. The art assets are mediocre, but they look well together. Second place would have to go to Destination Earth, simply because it looked fairly professional. Graphics were on spot, gameplay is a little boring. Third place? Eh…. I’ll say Produce Panic because I can see where they were trying to go with that. Graphics are the best in the competition; kitchen, characters, weapon, boss, all look good. And any more, its all about the graphics anyway, right?

  151. Katy on July 2nd, 2009

I really like Bio. I think it showed originality. I really like the way the instructions were designed. The goal was clearly communicated. This is my number one.

I also like Wacky Workout. This was easy to play and intuitive. However, I am not sure what the object/goal of this game is. This is my second choice.

My third choice is Produce Panic! Also very easy to play. Characters are appealing as is the scenery changes.

    “Biolancer” was smooth and responsive.
“Catch a wave” was innovative but not something you can play long without going hoarse.

by far the best game i’ve ever played. very cool graphics and special effects, i especially enjoyed the outstanding art work, its clear that the team spent a lot of time perfecting the character concepts and environmental designs. i felt it was extremely professional and completely blew everyone else away. unfortunately the other games aren’t quite up to the caliber of this game. the main hero was very appealing and enjoyable to watch, especially with all of his super powers and abilities. my favorite part is when the fat ladybug rapist glitches out. i also felt that having the background not in any sort of perspective was a very unique element to incorporate into the game design. it also doesn’t move along with the character which is also very amazing. overall, very complete and fun game. a thumbs up production for real!

Ok, after playing all the games and coming to the conclusion that pretty much all the people that haven’t voted for the obvious three winners haven’t played video games ever or they are pity votes. (Especially the one quoted bellow)
For all the teams, I would like to congratulate for completing the games.I would like to tell you guys great job on the games.

#1 Biolancer-its a great combination of two genres.
#2 Produce Panic- Great assets, needed to be finished though.
#3 Bio- very completed game but the assets weren’t as well done as the others.

No game should be “short simple and quick”
it makes for a boring game, obviously!

You name a game out there that doesn’t have a title screen and i guarantee that that game, in fact, is a bad game.

If all games were suppose to be “simple” then it just wouldn’t be that exciting (aka Spitwad assault).

I sure hope when people are being hired that they are not being hired for these concepts.

“Jason Emery on July 1st, 2009

I felt many of them were too ambitious and fell flat because of it.”

  181. James on July 8th, 2009

I am disappointed that so few of these games utilized any artists, made most of the games feel instantly boring.

1.Wacky Workout…despite being very glitchy, it was by far the most original and the character’s animations were somewhat funny (reminded me of Lester the Unlikely for the SNES)

    2. Biolancer…it was quite generic, but would be “much” better if all the enemies did not shoot at once. Best art in the bunch..at least in the title screens.

3….there is no third place…I really want to vote for produce panic…but the game is not even close to working properly (I really enjoyed the plant “boss” artwork, but fighting it was also broken)
