Colony: New Strategy Game

Hi!

Ever since Blizzard announced Starcraft 2, I’ve been inspired to make a Sci-Fi strategy game in Flash! And now that day is getting closer. Even though Colony is a relatively small game compared to Sonny 2 I’m trying out a lot of ideas that I haven’t done before. Here are some of the features of the game:

colonypicture

Online Multiplayer
The game can support up to four players (in 2v2 format) but you can also play 1v1 or with/against CPUs. So you can choose whether you want to play co-operatively, competitively, or both :) This is all possible because of Jiggmin’s BRILLIANT Blossom Server system. He’s also been hard at work on the back end of this game as well to make everything runs fast and smoothly. Thanks Jiggmin! Any Flash develops who want to make online games, I recommend you look at Jiggmin’s BlossomServer right away.

High Standards, Low Requirements
As3… rocks. By using it to render vector graphics into bitmap during runtime, we’re able to maintain a low file-size (the game without sound is only about 900kB), but have great looking visuals with no lag at the same time. The game’s highest settings even worked in a Multiplayer game on a computer with 500Mhz processor, and a 56k dial-up modem.

Random Music Generator
Instead of putting one big loop into the game, we’ve cut up the music into loads of little slices that fit together, so the system composes random and original music as you are playing, but it will still sound like one continuos track. I know it’s not a new idea, but I can’t believe that I didn’t think of it before :D

Interactive AI
When you’re playing on single player mode, you still need a strong partner to survive, so I’ve made you able to communicate to the AI. There are currently five AI personalities, and they all have different strategies and tactics in combat. You can talk to them via the chat, and ask them what they are going to build, or what you think they should do. They will let you know what the biggest threat from the enemy is, and if they are about to form an attack group. You can even ask them personal questions like their name and age :P

Unit Micro
This time you can actually command any units on the field. You can tell them to fall back, hold position, advance, or charge. There are many different kinds of units, some that do splash damage, some that fly, and some that regenerates its health. You can even have Meditecs behind the line healing your troops! You can even launch missiles from your base to take out a group of bunched up enemy units.

This is scheduled to be released at the end of this month, so watch this space! We just need to clean up on the multiplayer GUI a little, and stress test the servers, then we’re ready :D Here is a demo video in the meantime:

Cheers,
Krin

PS: Anyone interested to BETA test for balance and bugs before launch please send an email to me at Krin@ArmorGames.com with the topic “BETA.” You don’t have to write anything else, I’ll just mail you all the info you need.

I love RTS games, and I’m not sure what will happen with my life when Starcraft 2 comes out because I will be on that thing like 24/7! :P
Can’t wait to play your game. Best of luck!

Yeah ! It must be great !!!

Very nice to hear that someone is inspired by SC2, which will be the best game ever made :D.
Anyway, I only played single player. Overall, it was fun, albeit unfinished, but as this is a beta review, I will only list corrections, however minor (and minor many will be :D). Looks like the game shape up to be great.

    0) Your name is in the game…I don’t know if you care about that
    1) There is a level of difficulty that is “Hard Hard”. “Impossible”, maybe?
    2) After the tutorial, I played easy…and lost. Could be I’m terrible at the game, but to lose on the first level on level easy is still unusual. Anyway, I don’t think they should start off with more resources at the beginning anyway-maybe have a faster resource gain rate.
(Oddly enough, I played it again later, and didn’t build anything-my computer ally defended our base by himself. Weird…)
    2.5) What’s the difference between communist/facist, etc…?
    3) The game screen is just slightly too large.
    4) I didn’t hear any music, and I’m pretty sure that it’s not my computer.
    5) The scrolling is…annoying. It seems to have momentum, so that if I’m scrolling right, and then move my mouse to the center of the screen, it’ll slow down, but still scroll to the right.
    6) You cannot drag the scroll button in the chat menu.
    7) Phantom are too strong. 2 or 3 can take out an entire group of marines and tanks. They have that anti-air weakness, but with one of the spiders, they’re fine. Maybe if they moved slower/built slower/had a shorter range… 8) One anti-air spider killed my black queen…not cool (:D).
    9) Sometimes the green selector box (starcraft :D) doesn’t select, if I let go of the mouse above the playing field (but still near the mountains). The box won’t unselect, so even though I’m not holding the mouse down, the box is still there. I have to click somewhere else to get rid of the box.
    10) The marines are good at the beginnning (fast cheap), but get killed by everything very quickly at the end. Not that much you can do about it, though.
    11) Should I assume that if you don’t say whether it attack only land or air, it attack both?
    12) Displaying all the units that are selected is impossible, but it’d be cool to see the number of units selected.
    13) The central base has an attack, but it’s pretty pathetic (takes like 5 shots to kill a tank). I’d make it stronger, so that it can actually be effective, or make it upgradable. Speaking of which…
    14) The BIGGEST change I would want would be to have unit upgrades (either in a seperate building, or a separate panel). That way, there’s more to do besides spam units if you have an excess amount of resources (though it’s not like that happens often, to be honest).
    15) The AI controls weren’t in the beta, but I’ll trust that they’re good :D.
    16) 3 resources is too many, based on just this beta. It’s hard enough coordinating the units without having to constantly change the armory to get the resource I want. And speaking of which, it’d be nice if I could upgrade the armory-9 resources every ten seconds isn’t enough later in the game. Also, you can’t have this making 9 money every ten seconds, while tier 1 bank makes 3 every 5- the bank has to have more compared to the armory. Even the level 2 tier bank hardly makes more money per second than the armor does. Ditto for the solar grid.

That is basically everything wrong I found about the game. The good stuff I’ll leave for the real game’s review. In spite of a lot of corrections I’ve mentioned, the beta was actually very fun. Can’t wait for it to come out (and SC2 :D)

Ok, some suggestions, it would be cool to add a queue for the constructions.
In the tutorial, the tchat comes too fast, we dont have time to read.
And if we ever scroll to the top, with a new text in the tchat, it scrolls down, do we loose the line we were reading.
Gonna continue to test it :]

The Sakata Mk-II doesn’t say in the description that it requires Armory, yet it does. Fix this?

    1) The choice box (Government) doesn’t show up, it’s invisible, only got to notice it by pressing tab :)
    (I run a FireFox 3.0.12 on Ubuntu 9.04, Flash Player 10)

    2) I lost the tutorial, because I took too much time reading and answering, as he finished he just spammed “we need anti air” and I was done…

    3) Next time I knew what to do, I did it… well but it’s kinda strange that the game doesn’t seem to save my name ;)
    4) Clicking on the “Easy” or “Normal” buttons brings me to tutorial level anyways, other levels only accessible by using tab

  12. SLiPCoR on July 25th, 2009

Playing it on WinXP now, all the buttons are fine now - in Ubuntu, all buttons and boxes are only text…

In XP, everything seems to work fine for me…

  25. MEH on August 4th, 2009

The only problem this game has is that the multiplayer seems to fail. I can’t seem to actually play this game on multiplayer because of two HUGE reasons:
    a) Server is almost ALWAYS full.
    b) Game stops at a points where any units that are shooting continue shooting at one point. Then you need to restart the game and problem “a” comes back into hand.

    this game is amazing
i cry almost every time i play it
one of the best flash games ever
    Fun to play
    beautifly done
    good job

  44. Jetzul Beatrix4Evah on March 2nd, 2010

It was a fun game for a while, good job. However, I had two complaints:
    1) Hover tanks are ridiculously powerful against ground and Sakata Mk 2s are ridiculously powerful against air. Together, they are unstoppable except by even more hover tanks. FInding this out took a lot of fun out of the game.
    2) The storyline could have been much better. The planet doesn’t even have a name, let alone are niceties such as an explanation for why there are still Fascists 300 years after the last major Fascist movement collapsed provided. After Sonny I expected great 1 player features.
