Sinjid: Warrior Class

Hi ArmorBlog readership,

Here is an crossed-post article about the third character class in my Action-RPG Sinjid:

Behold the mighty Warrior - Click here to check out the video preview!

As you would expect, the Warrior is a heavy melee fighter, with very strong attacks. This comes at a cost – they lack the mobility of Assassins and the control of Priests. But that doesn’t matter, because the defensive capabilities of a Warrior are unparalleled – they are very hard to kill. That’s why a Warrior never runs. That, and also because their heavy armor really slows them down :3

The playing style of a Warrior is very dependant on timing. You will have way less ‘active’ skills than the other classes – but your ‘passive’ skills are a lot more meaningful. Whilst the Assassin and Priests are designed to hit hard then get away, Warriors are designed to stay engaged. To help with this, Warriors have a chained Kunai attack which can pull enemies towards you (the “GET OVER HERE!” spell). They also have some of the best defensive spells in the whole game.

Here are some examples of the Warrior skills:

Shockwave
Release a powerful shockwave that damages all enemies near you, and causes them to deal 75% less damage for 4 seconds.

Kunai Sting
A ranged attack that hooks and pulls the target towards you.

Brutal Advantage (Passive)
Every 10 seconds, you gain “Brutal Advantage” – causing your next attack to be critical, and to also stun the target.

Avenger (Passive)
Every hit you take has a 10% chance to cause your next attack to deal double damage.

Blade Storm
Rapidly strike the enemy 3 times in a row.

Sinjid: Priest Class Preview

Hi ArmorBlog readers! I’m Krin, and I’m here to talk about the new character class in my upcoming action RPG Sinjid!

The ‘Priest’ is the ranged caster class in Sinjid. Watch the Gameplay Video!

As a Priest, you will have powerful spells and projectiles, but you are also the most fragile class in the game. Just a few hits will be enough to kill you. To deal with this, you will have a large arsenal of defensive and control skills to keep the enemies at bay.

The playing style is a lot less ‘hack-n-slash’ than the Assassin class (which was featured in the other videos). You will need a strategy to fight your enemies. There are two ways to play a Priest – either as an Intellect based ranged caster, or as an Agility melee fighter. But in either case, the philosophy is the same. One wrong cast, poor positioning, or bad Focus (Sinjid’s ‘mana’) management could lose you the fight.

Here are some examples of the skills:

Summon Shadow
Spawn an ally to fight alongside you temporarily.

Shadow Lock
Damage an enemy, and suspend it in mid-air.

Soul Shatter
A finishing move that drains all of your Focus, and converts it into damage. This is one of the most powerful attacks in the game; but without Focus you’ll be sitting duck.

Decoy
Create a duplicate of yourself to take your place, while the real you turns invisible.

Energy Field
Instantly recover all of your Focus, and create an energy field where you are standing. Any enemies that enter this field will be frozen, but invulnerable.

PS: I don’t know when this game will be finished yet, but it’s getting closer everyday! So keep an eye on ArmorBlog (or on my blog) for any updates! :)

Sinjid: Designing Armor

Hey,

Krin here (creator of Sonny, Colony, and Flight). I’ve been blogging for while on my personal site, but I thought I’d cross-post anything game-development related because readers on ArmorBlog might be interested about it too.

——–

This week has totally been about armor sets. I’ve spent the whole week doing all the armor sets for the game, and it’s driving me nuts. I’ feel a fashion designer for virtual characters (on a side note, I think it’d be quite curious to collaborate with actual fashion designers on game character art). Let me tell you a bit about my process, just in case you decide to design your own armor set in the future. Really nothing special, but this point, I can’t think of anything else to write about, and my head is full of armor sets, so here we go…

Step 1: Research

One of my teachers once told me, being creative is like going to the toilet. You can’t poo if you haven’t eaten anything, even if you sit there for hours. So likewise, you won’t be able to come up with fresh ideas if you don’t ‘ingest’ new things. Basically, if you want your ideas to be good, you need to do a ton of research. But it is better to try at look at stuff that isn’t popular, or that not a lot of people use as inspiration – because then you’ll have different sources from everyone else. I went to the museums in London to look at the Japanese collections (there wasn’t a lot though), and also looked at a lot of old prints. If I were hardcore, I’d go to Japan. Guess I’m not hardcore enough :(

Step 2: Sketches

This is the most fun part! Here you take everything you’ve learnt from the research, and try to add your own twist or style to it. I just draw about a billion random designs on the paper and go crazy with it. Typically for me, only around 10% of the stuff is good enough to develop further. I also try to give all the boss characters a distinguishing feature on their armor or weapon.

Step 3: Finalize

I hate this part. This is where I actually have to draw it in Flash, and color it and rig it. The creative part is gone, now you’re just following blueprints. All-in-all it usually takes me 1-2 hours to do one armor set, depending on the detail. I have to do one for male, and then re-fit it for female, then after that, program all the parts that can be ‘dyed’ into a different color, so I can use the editor to re-color it and combine it into different sets (although the original colours are always my favourite).

Anyway, that’s my typical cycle of designing the armor for this game. Got time to spare? Want to have a go? If yes, then download the Sinjid character template here and print it out. You’ll have an A4 sheet of paper with grey character outlines on it. Now you go do your research, draw on the outlines with black ink, and then scan it and send it to me! I’d love to see what you come up with. Don’t worry if your drawing skills aren’t good – all you need is imagination! After two weeks, I’ll pick my favourite entry and put it into the game. Ready? Set? GO!
